The Tom Lantos Institute Opens in Budapest
We are pleased to announce the dedication of the Tom Lantos Institute in Budapest whichis committed to promoting tolerance and supporting minority issues in central and eastern Europe and around the world.
Katrina Lantos Swett, president of the Lantos Foundation, serves on the Executive Committee.
The Institute held its first conference in Budapest, Hungary on June 28th,This was the first annual conference dealing with important issues pertaining to democracy and human rights. This year’s conference focused on Roma integration strategies, the wave of democracy movements in the Arab world, and democratic transition.
On June 30th in the Upper Chamber of the Parliament in Budapest a two hour program took place which featured remarks from Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and a keynote address from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Over 500 people attended to witness the official inauguration of this institute and continue the human rights work of Tom Lantos in protecting fundamental freedoms and guarding and promoting democracy around the world.
On June 29th, a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate was passed regarding the June 30, 2011, opening of the Tom Lantos Institute in Budapest, Hungary.

Holocaust Museum and Vice President Biden Honor Tom Lantos
On February 24, 2011 a permanent plaque in tribute of Tom Lantos was unveiled in the Donor’s Lounge of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. The occasion was keynoted by Vice President Joe Biden with additional remarks from Congressman Chris Shays, Annette Lantos, and Katrina Lantos Swett.
